Dear Priscilla Koh,
I'm Khim, CareLine Advisor/Dietitian from Danone Dunex. The following is the answer to your question by a registered nurse and midwife.

Hiccups occur when the diaphragm, a muscle that separates the chest cavity from the abdominal cavity contracts. This contraction causes an intake of breath that is suddenly stopped by the closure of the vocal cords. This closure causes the characteristic "hiccup" sound.

Some causes of hiccups are:
i. drinking too much milk too quickly
ii.swallowing too much air especially when the child cries a lot
iii.emotional excitement like laughter

When your baby laughs, she takes in air and this stimulates the diaphragm to contract thus causing hiccups. This is normal and is part of growing up. As long as your baby is active, happy and thriving well, you do not have to worry.

Most bouts of hiccups go away on their own within a few minutes to a few hours and do not require any treatment

I read from a book, it says that hiccup is normal and we no need to worry. No need to do anything and the hiccup will disappear later. when my baby girl has hiccup, i will carry her and walk around, and it disappear after a few minutes. Or after a cry, the hiccup will disappear too.

hi wancheng, u can try giving ur child some water, see if the hiccups stop. Alternatively, u can give her a bit of sugar, a pinch of it, juz to taste onli , on her tongue. I try that for my daughter and either the water or the sugar works. Newborns also have this hiccup thing, at that time, i wuld tear a small paper and stick it on her head, beneath her hair...juz follow the elders say lah..

Hi Wancheng, My girl also had the same problem when she is about 1 month old but now she is better not so much hiccups. One of my friend told me to tear a small piece of tissue, put some water on it and paste on the forehead (to suck the air out). I didn't tried before, do not know whether does it works.
