> The Truth About Added Sugars
About us
There has been some information in the public space that states all carbohydrates in growing-up milk can be simply calculated as added sugar. The fact is NOT all carbohydrates in milk are sugars. Carbohydrates also include non-sugars such as:
• Oligosaccharides e.g. lcFOS which are prebiotics that promote the growth of good intestinal bacteria that support a healthy intestinal environment.
• Polysaccharides (long-chain carbohydrates) namely starch which is an important energy source for our body, especially the brain. Some undigestible polysaccharides are considered as dietary fibre. Dietary fibre helps to promote regular bowel movements and prevent constipation.
Simply deriving added sugars from declared carbohydrate content is inaccurate and not science-based. Carbohydrate content alone cannot provide accurate levels of added sugars. In turn, using a sugar “calculator” which uses carbohydrate content as a basis for assessing the added sugars in growing-up milk does not give you a true picture.
